DreamHost's pricing is a little higher than most hosting companies, the exception being GoDaddy, but just like old gramps told you, never take anything at face value. GoDaddy tends to nickel and dime customers to death with "add-ons" that companies like DreamHost include in the base price at more reasonable rates.
DreamHost was among the best hosts we found for standard features and programming/multimedia support. We also like how their operations are more transparent than other hosts. Instead of making you search for a support phone number that's not there, DreamHost says, up front, that they don't do phone support. They also have a blog where they post status updates, let customers know when servers are down or having trouble, and tips and deals.
DreamHost offers numerous pricing packages:
You also get one domain registration/transfer and private registration for free, but other upgrades will cost more:
DreamHost even gives you a whopping 97 days to try their services and test their hosting wares.
DreamHost gives unlimited disk space and bandwidth, and adds an additional 50 GB for backup space -- something other web hosts don't do. You get access to stats and raw log files, shell and unlimited FTP accounts, and .htaccess support.
Managing your site is easy through cPanel, and DreamHost supports just about every programming language/environment short of Python, ASP and ColdFusion. Whether you prefer MySQL or PostgreSQL databases, DreamHost gives you both as an option, and they support QuickTime video streaming without having to buy a dedicated IP address.
If you'll have multiple people managing your site/files, you'll need a way to make sure changes to code and versions are tracked, which is why DreamHost includes either a CVS or SVN repository. Don't worry about stomping someone else's code anymore!
For email DreamHost gives you Unlimited POP3 and IMAP addresses, SMTP and webmail. You even get forwarding, aliases, catch-all emails, form mail scripts, mailing lists, auto-responders, and spam protection thrown in for free.
Another great service DreamHost provides is free SSH access, which can cost as much as $24 a year with other hosts. You also get unlimited FTP users, anonymous FTP (which requires a dedicated IP address), and .htaccess support for password protecting specific directories.
DreamHost's Ecommerce hosting is done through Zen Cart, and they support Paypal integration, which is perfect for those who don't want to hassle with credit card info or SSL certificates.
DreamHost offers reportedly fast email support, but phone support costs extra. Tack $9.95 onto your monthly bill and you'll get three callbacks per month. They make up for the lack of true phone support and chat support by providing forums, FAQs, a blog, and even a wiki.
Overall DreamHost is an above-average web host. You'll pay a little more than with other hosts, but you also get a little more.
