There are dozens of web hosting services on the market, and while all serve the same primary function, additional features, functionality and support can vary greatly. PowWeb is one hosting provider that falls somewhere in the middle, proving to be just average in virtually every aspect we measured, including features, ease of use and technical support.
While most of the web hosting services we reviewed offer different tiers of hosting, PowWeb offers one plan with various features, including unlimited disk space, monthly bandwidth and email accounts. It would be nice if it had more features, but given its competitive monthly price, you can't go wrong with this basic but workable plan.
When it comes to features, PowWeb offers zero unique features and none of the advanced functionality we sought. The service’s feature set includes a site builder, shared SSL for eCommerce websites and advertising credits. We were disappointed to find the service provides very little advanced functionality; it lacks custom cron jobs, a script library, a file manager and customizable error pages.
PowWeb does provide a control panel, called the Member Operations Center, which is of their own design. The six main functions on the panel include Main, Personal, Accounting, Packages, DomReg and History. The Main tab provides you access to FAQs and lets you submit questions to support, sales or billing staff. The Personal tab allows you to view or edit your personal information as well as add new user accounts. The Accounting tab lets you create billing accounts, view online payments, add payment methods and view account history. The Package tab is where you will configure the meat of your web hosting service – you can configure POP3 accounts, SMTP, FTP, HTTP, domains, MySQL and SSL. The DomReg tab is where you register your domain names. The final tab is your History tab, which logs all the changes you make to your account.
While the control panel is organized and high functioning, new users may find it overwhelming and cumbersome to navigate. Any questions that may arise while using the service can typically be answered by referencing one of the service’s many support options. You can contact a customer service rep directly via toll-free telephone, live chat or email. However, we were highly disappointed that PowWeb does not provide 24/7 support; you can only get technical support during regular business hours. As a result, you may not always be able to get the assistance you need to resolve your issue right away.
Overall, PowWeb is a moderate web hosting company. It lacks some functionality, but the features the service does provide are decent and easy to use. The web hosting service would greatly benefit from the inclusion of more advanced features and comprehensive technical support that is available 24 hours a day.
Pros
PowWeb is affordable and offers eCommerce tools, including shared SSL and shopping carts.
Cons
The service doesn’t provide 24/7 support; telephone support is only available during normal business hours.
With limited technical support and a sparse feature set, this web hosting service fails to impress.
